What is it?
upliance is a steel jar on a smart base with a touchscreen. It weighs, chops, sautés, stirs and cooks, and the screen tells you what to drop in next. For plain rice it steams: the rice soaks in a bowl first, goes into the jar once, and the jar does the rest. Scroll to watch it make steamed rice from above.

Rinse, then soak 1 hour
Why soak?
Plan ahead: rinse 140 g of rice in a bowl two or three times, rubbing it gently, till the water runs almost clear. Then cover it with 400 ml of water and leave it for an hour. Three minutes of work, but the hour has to happen before you start the jar: soaked grains cook evenly and come out long and separate.
- You, 1 min
Drain it
Why drain?
Tip the rice into a sieve and let the old water run off. The jar gets fresh, measured water instead, so the rice cooks to the same texture every time.

Tip it in, add water
What goes in
All the drained rice, then 440 ml of fresh water. That's the only drop. Lid and crown on.

With the lid and crown on, upliance gives the rice one quick stir to spread it out, then steams it for about 14 minutes without stirring, till the water is soaked up and every grain is soft. No pot to watch, nothing to stir, no boiling over.

Why wait?
Scrape the rice out into a bowl and leave it for 10 minutes. It keeps steaming in its own heat, the last of the moisture settles and the grains firm up and separate: that's what makes it fluffy rather than sticky.
- You, 30 s
Fluff it. Serve hot.
Finish
Fluff it up with a fork or spatula and serve hot with dal, sambar, rasam or any curry.
